Homage/live footage – walk it talk it ft drake
What homage is:.Homage means great respect and honor, or something done to honor a person or thing. In media this is usually done with products such as movies, tv shows and music videos.
Live footage: live footage is a picec of footage that is raw so its takenin the present of time and is live. Its also unedited and original. It is mostly used in live tv shows.
An example of a live footage music video will be migos walk it talk it ft drakewhere the idea of the song is taken fromSoul Train - Papa Was A Rolling Stonewhich is an American tv show series that was based from 1970s to 2000s .Its where two people come onto the stage and they start to dance to a beat.
In the soul train, the characters come in a line (dancing) and this is very similar to the ,migos- walk it talk it one because of the way the characters prefer
This is the way walk it talk it is performed and the characters are perfrorming in front of the aufdeinece as they walk downwards dancing to the camera.
Mise en scene –
A lot of inspiration from the set of soul train was used to create this music video, from the lights on the wall . as you can in in migos- walk it talk it the writing in the background says and in the soul train one, it says soul.
Because soul trains episodes were filmed in the 1970s, the outfit of the characters was suitable for the time period. However, Migos- walk it talk it was filmed in 2017 but the characters were also dressed like the 1970s and this shows that migos- walk it talk it is really similar to the soul train because of the outfits and sceneary.
In migos walk it talk it you can see that there as 3 characters playing a game and someone with a mic acting as if they are talking ot the audience like a host would while the other 2 are participating in the game. This is because in the music video they wanted to give reference to the soul train video to make it look like they are in a tv show by playing games like they would in a real tv show.
Editing –
As soul train was set in the 70s, the quality wasn’t as high definition as it could be. The migos adapted this and used a grainy filter that has a sepia tone to the music video. In the soul train videos, in the beginning it says soul train and the writing is really shiny.
In the migos walk it talk it video you can also see the same shiny writing that writs culture ride and the tranition from the word to the actual scenery flases the screen and this is also done in the soul tain video
FTRANSITION FROM THE MIGOS WALK IT TALK IT
TRANSITION FROM SOUL TRAIN)
In Migos at the ending you the credits given to the crew who helped make the music video and in 2018 music videos don’t end with credits and they done this because they wanted to show that they are paying homage to the hit 70s show.
Childish Gambino- this is America
Interpretative music video
An example of an interpreatative music video will be childish Gambino- this is Americabecause there are multiple events occurring in the music video as a whole, both behind childish Gambino and including him.
Mise en scene
The title of the music video “this is America”. Its obvious that he is making a reference to the negative state of the country. In the beginning of the video childish gambinoo is standing with his back to the camera and he has no gun on his back, as he turns around, walks back, he suddenly pulls a gun out and shoots the guy on the chair on the head and this just shows how easy it is to get gns in America
Also in the first scene, when Gambino shoots the man, the gun is taken away niceky and is treated with respect, however when he shoots the guy, the guys body is dragged harshly showing that its not respected compared to the gun. This is also repeated in the church scene
Gambino makes it clear that the media can get over things so easly and an example of this is when he shot the guy on the chair and straight after started dancing with little. this shows how quick the media can get over things no matter how important the situation is.
Also as the music video continues there is a lot of chaos going on in the background (2:13 when the guy wearing the white shirt jumps of) and this shows that bad things in media get covered by new trends and good things.
At 2:27 you can see kids on their phone just chilling and a couple seconds later they are dancing with new dance styles of 2018 and this shows that kids copy the media a lot and do what the media shows them.
The last scene of the music video shows that Gambino is running from a bunch of people which gives a refernce to the movie get out where one of the slaves was running
At 1:40 a shot of a choir singing is shown where all the actors are happy and then Gambino shows up acting as if he is a part of them then grabbing a gun and shooting the others and this is a reference to the event that happened in Charleston church 2015 in south Carolina where a 21 year old shot 9 african americans
Camera
In the beggening you can see that the scene has been taken in long shot and there seems to be no cuts which shows that it was one take.
At 1:39 the camera pans to the right where the scene changes to a church setting and Gambino opens the door and goes into a completely different scene which also shows that churches are open to the public and are completely easy to enter.
The part where Gambino opens the door also shows that the video was filmed in a warehouse due to the fact that he opened a door and went into a church seen from the shooting scene where he shot the man.
In most of the switches in the music video, the camera changes really quicky and you don’t really notice the change taking place. Howver at 2:28 you can see that he was standing on the right and the camera pan slowly goes up to the kids and slowly goes down and all of a sudden Gambino is on the left hand side doing something else.
The ending of the video was filmed on a dolly track which is when the camera goes from a close shot to a long shot and starts to include more things such as a man with a guitar and a woman sitting on the hood of a car.
Editing
In this video there is not much editing because most of the things are taken in one shot, however there is a couple of editing scenes where the scenes switch really quickly, this is done by relying on quick changes. This is done by turning the camera at a quick speed and stopping the footage.
Sound –
Diegetic sound
In terms of sound for the music video, there are moments when Gambino goes to shoot someone and he shoots exactly on the beat, This is an example of diegetic sound as the characters would be able to hear the gunshots. Although these gunshots are included in the music video, the official audio for the music video does not contain the gunshots.
In my opinion I think that the aim of this music video was to show negative real life evnts that took past and and shows how the media covers it up by the new trends and everything that comes out.
Parody
An example of a parody song could be mandem on the wall- know me from (stormzy parody)where the song is a parody of stormzy- know me fromand its copied stormzys instrumentals and his scenes but changed up the words and the things that he talks about.
In stormzys song, it starts of him coming out of his mums house and un zips his hood in order for the audience to see his face and picks up a whatsapp cut out and iPhone cut out and begins to sing.
(stormzy coming out of his mums house). (stormzy picks up the whatsapp and I ______________________________________________phone cut out)
However in the mandem of the wall parody it starts of with a longer intro and starts of with one of the characters popping out of a bin shed and comes out and starts to give out funny shout outs (eastenders) and this already shows that its going to be a parody highly because of the fact that you can hear the funny (mockage) shout outs
(the character coming out of the bin shed)
This is an example of a parody because of the way that they have used stormzies enterance into the music video.
Mese en scene
At 1:10 in the mandem on the wall- know my from (stormzy parody) you can see the main character singing and his “friends” are in the back and the guy on the left is wearing a mask.
In stormzies one you can see stormzy as the main character and his frineds at the back and one of the characters have a David moist face mask.
In the mandem on the wall one, the face mask scene shows reference to the one inn stormzies, highly because of the fact that it’s the same idea with different people on the mask.
Another example of mise en scene is when stormzy shows the iphone and the whatsapp cut out
And in the mandem on the wall one, you can see the part where the character pulls out 2 I phone cut outs and this is also a refernce to the stormzy (original) song
because of the fact that they are technically showing the same thing but saying it differently.
Also another example of mise en scene is where stormzy takes off his hoodie to show the hashtag merky t shirt and this is the same thing as the one in mandem on the wall but it says two completely differently things, the one in the mandem on the wall refers to the one in stormzyies video because of the way that the hashtag has been presented to the audience
Another example of mise en scene is when in mandem on the wall – know me from (Parody) you can see that one of the charactersget into a bath robe and stats to talk and this is a parody of when stormzy done it but instead of a bathrobe he was waering a boxing costume with gloves on. The one in mandem on the wall refers to the one that storymzy done by wearing similar outfits and saying similar things and by mocking stormzy with the boxing outfit.
Finally, the last piece of mise en scene in the music video is when at the end of stormzys music video he stats to shout out things and people at the same time. In mandme on the walls music video the same thing happens but with everyone that took part in the song (comedy people) and this refers to stormzys song by the way the shout outs have been given.
EDITING
In mandem on the wall parody there wasn’t much editing however in some bits there were such as in the first part where one of the characters copied the whole verse of stormzys song and he got stopped by another charcter saying “those aint your bar fam, those are stormzys and on the screen something pops up with ^awks^. This refers to stormzys song by the way his vedio recording got cut out because of 2 cars that were blocking the way.
